Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy Still Happening, Reportedly Set Post-The Rise of Skywalker

There have been clashing rumors regarding the status of Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy, and the latest one claims that the project is still happening. The word is that the Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer and director's three new films will be set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

This is according to We Got This Covered, who revealed that Johnson's trilogy will take into account the events of the sequel trilogy, and will move the established history of the beloved franchise forward.

Johnson's work in Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been divisive, and the lack of updates regarding his trilogy when there's official news about that of the Game of Thrones duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has made people thinking that it has been scrapped.

However, Deadline has confirmed that Johnson, together with The Last Jedi producer Ram Bergman, is indeed involved in "crafting a new film series set within the Star Wars universe" and that those plans "remain on the boards."

As to what fans can expect in his trilogy, We Got This Covered thinks about the possibility of another female lead and even a possible appearance by Daisy Ridley's Rey, provided she survives Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Note that Ridley has said in the past that Episode IX will mark the end of her stint as the heroine and that it has been said before that the films will be disconnected from the Star Wars films we've seen so far, so we might not see a familiar face.

With this film series potentially steering away from the previous storyline, this trilogy would likely take the franchise in a completely different direction and put the spotlight on characters other than the Skywalkers that dwell in the uncharted territories of the Star Wars universe.

Johnson emphasized that his trilogy would not be a prequel and that he thinks it's pretty different from what the fans have seen from the previous trilogy. He noted that he was excited to reinvent the Star Wars universe with his ideas and is excited to share it with the fans, so it would seem that even though the trilogy is set post-Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he wouldn't be burdened by connecting to all the events that happened prior.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas on December 20, 2019.
