Kevin Smith has a bold prediction for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The title of the sequel trilogy capper, which will mark the end of the nine-film saga, has launched fans into speculation mode. This includes Smith, who shared his own theory during the latest episode of his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On.
Surely, The Rise of Skywalker gave fans that Return of the Jedi or Revenge of the Sith vibe. Historically, the titles have never been as specific as the new one appears to be, but Smith has a crazy idea suggesting the film has not broken the tradition just yet.
The way that Jedi has been used historically in these movies, including in the last movie – ‘the last Jedi, the Jedis must end,' all that sh*t – what if that's it for the Jedis? And perhaps the new religion [are the Skywalkers]? Didn't that just give you f***ing chills? What if it's that? Wouldn't that be f***ing dope? Like, [Luke] was so f***ing important – like, I'm going to cry – to the universe, that from then on, they named the order after [him]. They're all Skywalkers."
The Rise of Skywalker might be a little to on the nose, but it can still be interpreted in different ways. Perhaps, Luke could come back, Ben Solo will return to the light side, or Rey might be revealed a descendant. It may even be a reference to Anakin.
Indeed, it will be pretty crazy to think that by the end of the film, Skywalker is no longer just the name of the family of legends that started it all, but the namesake of a new generation of heroes that will continue their legacy.
This will no doubt be an epic way to honor these characters. So that even though the Skywalker saga has technically ended, they will always be present in new Star Wars films that will move the story forward.
The Rise of Skywalker comes out December 20.
