IT: Chapter Two Will Feature This Controversial Scene Skipped In The Previous Adaptation

Stephen King's IT had a lot of moments that were too controversial for the miniseries. There's a specific scene that the 1990 adaptation didn't include, but one that IT: Chapter Two will feature to stay true to the novel.

The scene in question sees a gay man by name of Adrian Mellon become a victim of a serious hate crime after three teenagers beat him up and push his body over a bridge. The TV version skipped it altogether, but screenwriter Gary Dauberman believes it is too important to leave out in the sequel.

"It is an iconic scene in the book and one we wanted to include in the movie," he told Hollywood Reporter. "It is the first attack in present-day Derry and sets the stage for what Derry has become. It is the influence of Pennywise even while he is hibernating, and it's pure evil what happens to Adrian. These bullies working through Pennywise was important for us to show," he went on to explain.

However, it sounds like it will play a little differently on IT: Chapter Two. In the book, the hate crime marked the first appearance of Pennywise since his hibernation. It was a way to show his evil taking over the town of Derry and how he sets out to harvest, so to speak.

Dauberman's statement suggests that the incident happens before the killer clown makes his bloody return, which means he maintains an effect on Derry even when he is inactive. Even then, fans of the source material will be comforted to know that Dauberman is committed to following the book as closely as possible.

Meanwhile, he also teased that even though the film will focus on the adult Losers, the young versions are still "definitely a presence" in the IT sequel. He promised that those who loved the first film will be satisfied.

In the same interview, Dauberman also admitted that he is still working up the courage to reach out to King.

"I have countless email drafts for him, and I have been wanting to reach out, but it is hard to figure out what I would say that doesn't sound so trite," the writer said.

"I need to reach out to him, but I have such a fear of rejection. I don't want to send the email and hear nothing back and be like, 'Oh... f--k,'" he went on to say.

IT: Chapter Two hits theaters September 6.
