Despite having quite a confusing timeline and lots of questions about the difference between the series and the books, a lot of fans thoroughly enjoyed Netflix’s The Witcher. Perhaps one of the things that the viewers are really curious about is why the first season only had eight episodes, but there might be a good explanation for that.

During a recent AMA on Reddit, The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich answered multiple questions from fans, one of which is the aforementioned topic about Season 1’s episodes. “The number of episodes is based on the story we’re telling,” she said. “Our sense of what an audience will watch (and finish), and the budget.”

“When you're starting a show, and don't know if it will be a success, more episodes generally means that you get to spend less money on every episode,” Hissrich added. She admitted that they didn’t want to do something like that, but eight felt like “the magic number.”

She also revealed that they will be approaching the second season “in a similar way.” She then posed multiple questions which are likely some of the things they will base off of in the following season; including the building blocks they need to set up future stories, or what will work on television in general. “For instance -- no one wants to see Triss have diarrhea for three episodes,” she added. “So what are we trying to glean from that in the books, and how do we present that onscreen?”

Hissrich also revealed in a previous AMA that they would delve deeper into the story of the extinction of monsters and the Witchers in Season 2. And of course, to show more about Princess Cirilla’s abilities.
