Following the success of the John Wick movies, Keanu Reeves will be trying his hand at being the executive producer for a female-centric John Wick spinoff in the works under Lionsgate. The project was announced back in 2017, and now, a director is on board to work on the movie.

The spinoff was penned by one of the writers of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Shay Hatten. Details regarding the plot are yet to be announced but the spinoff will be titled Ballerina.

Deadline reveals that the movie will be directed by Len Wiseman who is known for his works like Underworld, which was also a female-driven project; as well as Live Free or Die Hard and the 2012 Total Recall. Ballerina follows the story of a female assassin who is plotting a revenge against the people behind her family's death.

Fans might have had a glimpse of the said female assassin when she appeared briefly in the last John Wick film. However, it is not yet confirmed if the same character will be played by Unity Phelan, who was the actress written in the credits. And as for Keanu Reeves' appearance, it is not yet confirmed but it will be likely for the actor to make a cameo since he is the executive producer after all.

Alongside Reeves, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski will be producing the movie with James Myers overseeing the project for Lionsgate.

For now, the studio is working on John Wick 4 which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 21, 2021.
