Amazon's Lord of the Rings series is set to explore the events preceding J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. While actor Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins across Peter Jackson's trilogy, isn't involved with the upcoming series, he revealed that he's willing to make a cameo, even suggesting a name change for the show.
"I am super fascinated by what they're doing with the show," Wood told Indie Wire. "They're calling it The Lord of the Rings, but I think that's slightly misleading."
"From what I understand, the material they are working on exists chronologically further back in history in the lore of Lord of the Rings or Middle Earth than any characters represented in Lord of the Rings," he added. "It sounds more 'Silmarillion' era. Not to get nerdy, but it's the Second Age of Middle Earth."
Wood says he's "curious" about the storytelling and is excited about the series shooting in New Zealand. The actor thinks there's a "visual continuity" with what was done in the movies and isn't surprised that the Amazon series had the go-ahead to resume shooting there again "because New Zealand conquered this thing and they're Coronavirus free."
As for the plot details, just like fans who are excited for what's to come, Wood "knows as much about the series as you do as far as what they're doing with the material." He has no involvement with the show but is "absolutely" willing to make a cameo, only if it would make sense and is "organic to what they're doing." That said, Wood's basically seems up for anything if it means having an "excuse" to go to New Zealand.
Production for the Lord of The Rings series is expected to resume this September.
