One of the most memorable scenes in Birds of Prey is the hair tie moment between Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jurnee Smollett-Bell's Black Canary. It got a lot of attention because it's something that a male director wouldn't normally consider placing in an action scene, and also, it was a popular scene simply because it was just really badass. Director Cathy Yan even considers this as a "big middle finger" to female standards.

"[Writer] Christina Hodson had gotten the idea," Yan told the New York Times. "She and her sister were talking about, why is it that all women in every action movie have perfectly blown-out hair, and it's always down?"

The director agreed with what Hodson and her sister said. "I put my hair up just to wash my face, to brush my teeth, to do very light amounts of yoga," Yan said. "So we wanted to give a big middle finger to some of those expectations."

The scene in question is the part where the all-female ensemble faces Black Mask's goons in a brawl out. When a weapon was coming towards Black Canary, she ducked to avoid it which got her hair all messed up all over her face, making it hard to see anything. Harley Quinn then lend some help by attacking the man behind Canary, then proceeded to offer her a hair tie.

It was only for a brief moment but it's certainly a cool scene and something that isn't normally shown in movies, as opposed to other action films, showing that a woman's hair is all perfect and is looking good all the time while in a fight. In addition to the expectation of women looking sexy by having their hair down in fight scenes.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is now available on VOD.
