The Star Wars sequel trilogy only briefly touched upon Kylo Ren's past before he made his turn to the Dark Side. While it was clear that Ben Solo cared for his parents, his life as a child and his relationship with Leia and Han were unclear; but Adam Driver himself has some thoughts about his character's childhood.

In a recent interview with Inverse, The Magicians author Lev Grossman shared outtakes from his piece about The Rise of Skywalker, revealing Driver's insight with regards to the Supreme Leader's childhood. "I think probably the thing that was missing for me, I wanted to see more about Kylo's childhood," Grossman said. "I thought they would go back to show us more about why he turned to the dark side."

According to Grossman, Driver said that both Han and Leia were "way too self-absorbed" and was so into the idea of themselves as heroes to be able to become attentive parents for the "young and tender" Ben Solo as he really needed.

"There wasn't really that much of it in the movie," Grossman added. "So I just think we have to assume his childhood sucked."

While Kylo Ren turned to the Dark Side after waking up to find Luke Skywalker attempting to kill him, it looks like his emotional trauma and anger started way before that; possibly stemming from his "self-absorbed" parents' who weren't attentive enough for the young Ben Solo.
