Joss Whedon Was Already Tapped for Justice League Way Back

Zack Snyder's departure from Justice League had included not just tragic news involving his family, but also surprising announcements in the form of former Avengers director Joss Whedon coming onboard the project.

Within Warner Bros and DC Comics, however, this doesn't seem to be a surprising issue at all. Speaking with Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of Wonder Woman, DCEU producer Charles Roven shared that Whedon had already been helping out even before the tragedy struck:

"We're excited about the film, of course, but we were saddened by the events that caused Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder to have to leave and turn the reins over to Joss Whedon. He was already working with us on some of the scenes for that additional photography that we're going to be doing shortly. It was fortunate that Zack convinced him, and he agreed to step in and finish the movie—to help Zack finish his vision. We're excited about that."

From the looks of it, Whedon has been slated to do more than just smoothening out the edges of the script. Right now, perhaps the bigger question is where the DCEU will be following Snyder's departure. The franchise is still taking off, with only three movies released so far.

Now that Wonder Woman may start picking up the pace for the rest of the DC universe, it would be a shame if the franchise didn't have the kind of direction and attention that it previously had.

Justice League will be out in theatres on Nov. 17. Other movies in the DCEU with release dates include Wonder Woman on June 2, Aquaman on December 2018, Shazam in 2019, and Cyborg and Green Lantern Corps in 2020.
