Joss Whedon Doesn’t Want To Cast Big Name Star For Batgirl

A lot of fans were ready to pitch the stars they wanted to see suiting up as Barbara Gordon when word came out that Warner Bros. was negotiating with Joss Whedon to direct a Batgirl film for the studio.

Some have thought of Whedon-verse fan-favorite Amy Acker from Dollhouse and Angel ; others have thought of Mad Men and Community star Alison Brie while others yet have considered Marvel's Nebula actress Karen Gillan as Batman's sidekick.

However, it seems like Whedon has a different idea for Batgirl. Instead of choosing from a pool of Hollywood stars and actresses, the former Avengers director would rather much cast someone fresh off the boat.

Attending the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere, the director was asked by Variety whether he had an eye on anyone for Batgirl's role.

"I don't have my eye on anybody," the director said in response. "I feel like I'm creating this character. I'm in a dialogue with her, and then we'll see who joins that later on."

"I doubt it'll be ‘a name.' I think this is somewhere where you'll go an find Batgirl, and then you cast her. I'm not against movie stars; they're great. But you need somebody who's going to be just right.

And a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight," he said, "so it's not as critical, so … definitely Vin Diesel."

Whedon does have a pretty strong point – what Batgirl really needs is an actress who'd really fit the part. Though she did appear in the Fast and Furious franchise, Gal Gadot wasn't as well-known an actress. However, when she debuted as Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman, many thought she was one of the best things in the film.

Batgirl is to be written based on Gail Simone's 2011 New 52 comics of Batgirl. The film doesn't have any release date as of yet, but we'll be sure to keep everyone updated.
