Joss Whedon Called Marvel President Before Discussing With Warner Bros. About Batgirl

After announcing a surprising decision to greenlight a DCEU film for Batman's former Robin, Dick Grayson, back in February, Warner Bros. decided to add on another Bat film, this time for the New 52 Barbara Gordon Batgirl.

Though the studio didn't give any word about the casting of the film, Warner Bros. surprised fans even further when it revealed that the Batgirl movie would be helmed by Marvel director, Joss Whedon.

Sure Whedon did a pretty good job at directing Marvel's first two Avengers films, but it sure takes guts to steal off a Marvel director for a Batgirl standalone for the DCEU. The idea of Whedon in talks with the DC to write, direct and produce the film rocked the Marvel fandom's boat.

However, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reveals that he had received a call from Whedon a few months ago before news broke that he was being considered for Batgirl.

"He called a couple months ago, which he didn't have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him," said Feige. "And we couldn't be more supportive. We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film be awesome."

Marvel and DC fans have had a long history of rivalry and many tend to be really possessive of people attached to each franchise, so it isn't surprising to hear that fans were rather hurt when word broke out that Whedon was in discussions with DC. What's more shocking is Feige's support – after all DC is Marvel's major competitor. It's good to hear Marvel being a good sport by supporting Whedon's decisions.
