Josh Trank Was Hired on for a Bobba Fett Movie, but Dropped Out

The Star Wars project that director Josh Trank left a while back was Bobba Fett movie, Entertainment Weeklyreports. There were plans for Trank to helm a movie about the bounty hunter, but he dropped out following the troubled production of his 2015 Fantastic Four movie. Apparently, the movie came very close to being announced before Trank's departure put it on the back burner.

Lucasfilm was prepping to show a teaser reel for the movie at the 2015 Star Wars Celebration before Trank's departure. Now the future of the spinoff is uncertain. Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy is equally vague about the possibility of other spinoffs.

Kennedy stated that there are lots of potential movies the company had been discussing. "But we are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we've finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?"

According to Kennedy, it was George Lucas's idea to do standalone movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. "George talked to me about doing this when I first came aboard," Kennedy said. "He had often thought about doing it and he had actually written down three or four thoughts and ideas, directions you could go. Obviously inside the mythology there were lots of opportunities. So that was the first conversation I had."

However, Kennedy clarified that Rogue One and the Han Solo movie weren't specifically ideas from George Lucas. "We certainly talked about origin type stories, but we didn't get into the specifics of that," Kennedy said about her conversation with Lucas. "We talked a lot about the Jedi and the foundational ideas that George had thought about when he created the mythology. It was sort of spit-balling ideas."

Kennedy said she hopes Rogue One will just be the beginning for Star Wars. "Rogue One felt like a great beginning for because they know about the Death Star plans. They know the things that happened in A New Hope," she said. "So it had those familiar elements, those anchor points, but it also was about a completely new set of characters. So it felt like a really good template for the kinds of things that we feel these movies can do."

I hope we get lots of cool Star Wars spinoffs in the future. It's too bad about the Bobba Fett movie, but it was probably for the best if the director didn't feel up to it. What do you think? Would you like to see a Bobba Fett movie?
