Joe Russo Talks About Which Secret Wars Story he Wants to Adapt for the MCU

Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo was once asked about his idea on how to bring the Fantastic Four and X-Men to the MCU to which he pointed out to the comic Secret Wars. A lot of fans thought he was talking about the more recent Jonathan Hickman version which combined various alternate realities, but he was actually talking about the original classic.

Talking to CBR, Russo explained:

"Hopefully they're about to get their hands on a few of them. Listen, my second favorite character growing up, and one of my prized possessions in my comic book collection is Incredible Hulk #181, which of course is the first appearance of Wolverine. I feel like the mission of the Marvel Universe is to keep expanding and surprising people. Surprise them with casting choices, surprise them with story choices. If we're moving into this world of crossover events, certainly that affords opportunity for other large-scale stories from the books like Secret Wars — which was another favorite comic of mine as a kid."

For now, Marvel head Kevin Feige has said that their plans to integrate the Fox Marvel characters are still a long way down the line, but you can't blame them for thinking ahead. With the endless gold mine of material they have to adapt from the comics, it's only a matter of time before Secret Wars finds its way to the big screen.

I personally am a fan of what the Russos have brought to Avengers: Infinity War, and I'm actually looking forward to seeing more of their work in the MCU. With these huge movie crossovers, it certainly helps to have a directing duo as compared to just one guy at the helm (Sorry, Joss Whedon).

Catch Avengers: Infinity War in theaters April 27.
