James Wan Teases “Interesting Villains” In Aquaman

It's one thing to develop protagonists/superheroes in comic book movies, but it's an entirely different thing to create strong villains that will provide substance and interesting plot twists in a superhero's story. It has been an ongoing struggle in comic book films, and apparently Aquaman director James Wan is prepared for the challenge.

In an interview with Cinema Blend at the Los Angeles press day for The Conjuring 2 this weekend, the filmmaker explained what makes Aquaman, and its villains, unique than the rest of the other superhero movies slated for release in the next few years. While Wan didn't reveal any specific villain, he did tease that there will be a number of villains who Jason Momoa's Aquaman will be going head to head with.

He said:

I gotta say, one thing I love about the Aquaman world is all the really different, really interesting characters. They are interesting characters, including the villains – I'm not going to tell you which villains I'm going to play with! [laughs] But they're super cool. They're very larger than life, but they're unique.

He added how the movie's unique field persuaded him to helm it. Wan explained further:

That's what I'll speak to – the uniqueness of the Aquaman world. There are so many superhero movies now; I don't want to make a superhero movie now for the sake of doing it, but there's something unique to the world of Aquaman.
There's a reason why they've never made a movie about this until now, because technology has never allowed us to tackle something this complicated. And so because of that it feels like something different, and that uniqueness is what I'm excited about.

Back in March, the Fast & Furious director also teased thrilling "sea monsters and cool creatures." Whether these creatures are the villains we'll just have to wait and see.

There are other DCEU movies slated for release prior to Aquaman, therefore it could take long before there will be any major developments and teases about the film's plot and characters. Still, Wan's recent statements and his excitement over helming the movie provides some perspective at how large a scale the movie will be, and it should get fans excited as well.

Considering recent news about a potential Namor the Sub-Mariner movie at Marvel Studios, it would certainly pose a challenge to Wan's Aquaman, and hopefully that challenge will show positive results.

Aquaman hits theaters on July 27, 2018.
