James Gunn Promises To Fix This Problem About The Guardians of the Galaxy Franchise

Guardians of the Galaxy is arguably one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that set the bar for action-comedy superhero films. That said, it doesn't mean that the franchise is not without its faults.

Director James Gunn posted a video last week on his Facebook page where he and Star Lord actor Chris Pratt wrapped up filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The video has gotten a lot of comments, and some of those comments the filmmaker has taken the time to read and respond to. In the comments, one fan said he couldn't find any Gamora action figures for his daughter, and Gunn responded and said it was a problem he's making sure to fix when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes around.

Apparently, Gunn is already aware of the issue and he understands where the fan is coming from, which is why he said he's already working to fix the issue. He said:

I'm making sure this time around the female characters are more represented in the toy world. Not only Gamora, but Mantis, Nebula, and Elizabeth Debicki's character as well.

The issue started back in 2014 when Gamora toys or merchandise were hard to find while male characters like Star-Lord or Groot were easily spotted.

The issue doesn't concern just Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, other toys of female characters like Black Widow and Rey remain heavily underrepresented as opposed to their male counterparts, and one thing these characters have in common apart from the fact that they are female is that they are owned by Disney.

It was the same reason why Shane Black said his original script for a villain in Iron Man 3 was dropped – he wanted a female villain but the studio thought a female action figure wouldn't sell.

It remains to be seen whether Gunn's actions in addressing the issue will bear fruit once Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is released, but it's nice to know that a man of such a position is concerned enough to make a stand and use his influence to make a change.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
