James Cameron Says Avatar Sequels’ Are In “Full-Tilt Production”

Blockbuster director James Cameron has been promising a set of sequels to Avatar for years, however work on the follow-ups to the 2009 epic science fiction film have been relatively slow, with the filmmaker waiting for technology to catch up with his vision for the sequel.

Now it seems like the sequels are finally heading towards production with principal photography scheduled for September. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly to help promote Terminator 2: Judgment Day's 3D re-release, Cameron decided to give Avatar fans an update on the sequels, explaining that he was preparing for production in September.

"Oh, we're in production. We're in full-tilt production. We're in what we call ‘scouting,' which basically is shooting for me. I'm on the stage all day long during the scouting process, because there are no sets or locations, other than in the virtual world, so I do all my location-scouting with a troop of actors that go through the virtual sets, and give me a sense of the scale and position, lighting, that sort of thing. Then, I'm in rehearsals with my principal cast and I start with them at the end of September."

It's taken a while for Cameron to decide when to start working on the Avatar sequels, and it's great to hear that production's finally going to roll for Avatar 2. The film industry landscape has changed so much since Avatar premiered in 2009, and we're all excited to see what Cameron can do with the current advancements.

Avatar 2 hits cinemas on Dec. 18, 2020, Avatar 3 on Dec. 17, 2021, Avatar 4 on Dec. 20, 2024, and Avatar 5 on Dec. 19, 2025.
