Legendary director James Cameron will regain a large piece of the rights and creative control of The Terminator movie series in 2019. Fans who had stayed away from the last three films will be stoked to hear that the filmmaker is already preparing to recreate the saga in his own image. He wants Deadpool's Tim Miller to direct the next installment, even as he starts creating storylines that will put a final closure to Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The first movie launched his career in 1984 and the second cemented him in the minds of international audiences as a visionary.
In the Deadline exclusive, Cameron is laying the seeds for the conclusion to the two first Terminators. If he follows the path taken by Bryan Singer in resolving his X-Men movies, Cameron just might end up retconning the other movies and the brief TV series out of existence. Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation, Terminator: Genisys, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles just might be consigned to an alternate reality that never happened. Cameron had never been involved in any of these versions.
Cameron sold the rights of Terminator back in the 1980's for a pittance of $1 to producer Gale Ann Hurd. In return, the studio could not fire him as director. He would also regain a majority of the rights after 35 years, which is two years from now.
David Ellison, the producer of Terminator: Genisys who bought the rights in 2013, is working with Cameron to regain the series' footing. He is financing a series of creative brainstorming sessions with top science-fiction writers to explore new angles and storylines for Cameron's reclamation of Terminator saga.
