Wizards of the Coast Finally Addresses Magic: The Gathering's Problem With Oko

People in the Magic: The Gathering community have been complaining about the new and overepowered Throne of Eldraine Planeswalker card, "Oko, Thief of Crowns" because of how it's dominating the Standard meta (and other MTG formats), with many calling to ban the card from Standard. Now Wizards of the Coast is finally addressing the problem.

During Monday's Magic Arena livestream on the Twitch.tv/magic, WotC members Melissa DeTora and Paul Cheon brought up the issue with Oko, and DeTora said that play design had a goal to make Oko a powerful card in Standard but they underestimated how powerful his +1 ability as a defensive ability to remove creatures and artifacts. "Oko is stronger than it thought it would be, and we are monitoring the format to see see how things are going to shape up after the MC (Mythic Championship)," DeTora said. "So we know it is very strong."

How did they not realize how powerful Oko is? Did they just target their own Food token during playtesting?

In the recent Mythic Championship Qualifiers (MCQ), most of the decks that made Day 2 were Oko variants (Bant Food, Bant Ramp, Simic Food, and Sultai Food).

WotC will most likely ban Oko in Standard after Mythic Championship VI next month.
