War of the Spark, the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, is coming this April but if you're planning to attend Grand Prix London or the second Mythic Championship in MagicFest London, you're probably going to skip the pre-release events for it.
The official Magic: The Gathering Twitter account announced on Monday that MagicFest London and the second Mythic Championship (formerly Pro Tour) this year will happen in the same weekend (April 26-27) as the pre-release events for War of the Spark. They went on to add that more details will be announced about this eventful weekend later this month.
#MTGWAR Prerelease is April 27-28 - the same weekend as #MTGLondon and the second Mythic Championship of the year. We'll have more to share about this exciting weekend of Magic later this month. Stay tuned!— Magic: The Gathering (@wizards_magic) February 11, 2019
Many players from the UK and all over the world are criticizing the decision to schedule MagicFest London on the same weekend as the War of the Spark pre-release because they think that it will affect the pre-release attendance of local game stores.
Check out what others have to say:
I'm both angry and upset that you are making UK players choose between supporting UK stores or playing in a competitive event (which we get so few of). How do you expect stores to survive if you don't support them adequately? Or give them info in time to prepare?— Christopher Fox (@Fox_Plays_Games) February 11, 2019
1. Magic fest London best be #mtgwar format w/prerelease kits.— Xun-ling Au (@XunlingAu) February 11, 2019
2. This is a massive middle finger to UK stores, TO's etc
3. On demand #MTGwar needs to be available
4. Why can't your announcements be complete?
5. Why did it take you so long to announce this.
6. See point 2.
Well after all they couldn't care less about game stores these days. Tbh if it isn't Arena they don't care— Ryan Plays Games! (@Ry_Plays_Games) February 11, 2019
wow you guys must really hate LGS's, my store is normally dead on GP weekends, this pre release could be a financial disaster for mine and many more stores— Pete Thorpe (@BraidsTCG) February 11, 2019
Seriously, what’s going on with the lack of information ? So basically you’re putting UK players in-between a rock and a bloody hard place: Do I support my LGS and pre-release or go to #MTGLondon ? Which coincides with the biggest public event of the entire year in the City!— Luke Worthington (@L4W_15) February 11, 2019
Honestly, not a fan of this. Now people in the UK have to choose between going to MF London and going to their local prerelease, to say nothing of the judges who will be working that weekend being now-unable to participate in their local prerelease events.— Jacob Milicic (@BotsRPeopleToo) February 11, 2019
This is fucking wank. Excuse my English parlance.— Jamie D (@manad0rk) February 11, 2019
Prerelease at the same time as #MTGLondon, at the same time as the London Marathon, which will be taking up THOUSANDS of hotel rooms across the city?
Why do you hate UK Magic? I'd hate to run a London LGS that weekend.
War of the Spark will be released in April 2019. It's the third of a series of consecutive sets set in Ravnica and is said to focus on the epic war between Nicol Bolas and the Gatewatch.
