New Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker From Throne of Eldraine Revealed

The fairy tale-themed Magic: The Gathering expansion is coming this October, and it will introduce a new planeswalker we've never seen in previous Magic sets before.

Today, Forbes has revealed the new planeswalker from Throne of Eldraine: Oko, a Fey shapeshifter "who is as charismatic as he conceited, a man who is mysterious, clever, and vain." Check out his artwork by Chris Rallis from Wizards of the Coast:

As you can see, the artwork gives a clue to his true mana colors. Although he looks like a Sultai (blue/black/green) kind of planeswalker, the art shows Temur colors (blue/green/red).

Oko's story will be featured in the first Throne of Eldraine ebook, Throne of Eldraine: The Wildered Quest by Kate Elliott. Recent spoilers also revealed that Garruk is in the story. Wizards of the Coast's Head of Story and Entertainment shared some details with Forbes about Oko, revealing how he ignited his planeswalker spark.

Oko is from a plane ruled by Fey who believe in a unified society, one where the ruling class has decided that for the betterment of all, the natural mischievousness of the Fey has to be suppressed. To the ruling class, they had created a perfect society—but for Oko, who was born with incredibly powerful shapeshifting abilities, this culture went against everything he was and contradicted his deepest, truest self.
Styling himself as a speaker of truth, Oko felt he held a mirror to the hypocrisy of his world. The ruling class did not quite see it this way. They subjected him to magical procedures intended to suppress his powers but only succeed in igniting his spark. We can imagine this was a terrible experience for him and one that would make it almost impossible for him to trust anyone again—especially those in positions of authority.

It's sounds like Oko is an anti-hero with a dark past and it sounds like he's the kind of character that members of the LGBTQ community will be able to relate with.

Kelman went on to reveal that Oko loves to use his shapeshifting abilities to prank people.

Oko looks like a Korean pop-star and reminds me of Edward from the Twilight series.

Magic head designer Mark Rosewater previously confirmed that there will be three planeswalkers featured in Throne of Eldraine: Rowan and Will Kenrith, and a new planeswalker. Now, we know that the new planeswalker is Oko. It looks like Garruk won't be getting a new card in the upcoming expansion even though he's part of the story.

Throne of Eldraine, the 82nd Magic expansion, is set to release on October 4. Prerelease events will take place on September 27 to 29. Throne of Eldraine is said to be inspired by the romantic Arthurian legend of Camelot and Grimms' Fairy Tales.
