The new era of Magic: The Gathering esports kicks off this month with the two Players Tour tournaments happening this weekend, and fans are excited to watch the game's best players compete for a total prize pool of $350,000 between both events. Among them are the 24 members of the Magic Pro League and the 32 players of the Rivals League. Throughout the season, these players earn thousands of dollars in appearance fees in addition to prizes earned at the tournaments, but they have some strict rules to follow, and Wizards of the Coast recently updated them to include rules that forbid them from criticizing the esports leagues.
Over on Twitter, MTG writer Daniel Fournier recently pointed out the highlights from the updated MPL and Rivals League rules, and they reveal that the players can be fined $55 for inciting negative public opinion against the MPL if unintentional, and a loss of an event invite if intentional. They can also be fined for minor and major unsporting conducts. Among the other rules highlighted include no flip flops and shorts, no scooping from friends, no money-drafting, and no criticisms against Wizards and Hasbro. Check out his tweets below:
These rules are not surprising since most jobs have non-disparagement clauses in their contracts, and being in the MPL or Rivals League is a job.
