Magic: The Gathering is Getting A New Card Stock

Wizards of the Coast

As an effort to improve the playing and collecting experience of Magic: The Gathering players, Wizards of the Coast will be introducing a new playing card paper for the trading card game as early as June 7. The publisher announced the upcoming changes today on their website.

"Some of you might be aware that we began introducing different playing cardboard in the Japanese market several years ago, and in 2018 we expanded distribution of that stock to other markets with both Battlebond and Ultimate Masters," Wizards of the Coast's Senior Operations Manager Tom Wänerstrand wrote. "This year, in our continued commitment to developing new and improved processes and materials, we're introducing another card stock into our portfolio."

"While there are a multitude of reasons we're pleased with this new paper, in particular, we are happy with improvements in areas of our development focus: surface consistency for printing, improved card cutting, as well as rigidity and 'snap'," Wänerstrand added.

In recent years, I've heard some players complain about the quality of MTG's card stock and I also remember feeling the cheap quality of card stock of Magic cards from Amonkhet but I didn't notice any issues in cards from the recent sets like Ravnica Allegiance and War of the Spark. It's good to know that the team at Wizards of the Coast are doing their best to improve the experiences of players worldwide.
