Magic: The Gathering is Changing The Companion Mechanic

Wizards of the Coast recently confirmed that the next Magic: The Gathering ban and restricted announement will be on Monday, June 1, which will be discussing changes to the Standard and Historic formats. The company also alluded to some sort of change to the Companion mechanic from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. In a recent Shandalar Twitch livestream by WotC, DailyMTG Editor Blake Rasmussen confirmed that the changes on Monday will change the Companion mecahnic as a whole.

The change will likely reduce the power level of Companions. Maybe they will raise the restrictions, or add an additional requirement to cast Companion spells from Exile. Companions have dominated the format of every MTG format in which they are legal, ruining the diversity of eternal formats like Legacy and Vintage. Decks that play Yorion as a Companion have warped the Standard format while other Companions like Lurrus and Obosh are dominating Modern, Pioneer, and Historic formats.

What change do you think they will make to the Companion mechanic on Monday? Let us know in the comments section below, and be sure to check back here on Epicstream on Monday.
