Magic: The Gathering Seb McKinnon Shares His Darker Initial Proposal Sketch For Aminatou, The Fateshifter

Wizards of the Coast

Seb McKinnon is definitely one of the best Magic: The Gathering artists right now. His recent works for Ravnica Allegiance like Bedevil and Growth Spiral look awesome but he's also known for illustrating the Planeswalker Commander card, Aminatou, the Fateshifter but the artist just revealed the original design and it looks darker than the final version. For your reference, here's the card from the Commander (2018 Edition):

Over on Twitter, McKinnon shared a comparison of both versions, and as you can see below, the original still looks great but the final version is more balanced. Check it out:

"One of my favourite MtG commissions was designing Planeswalker Aminatou," McKinnon wrote. "On the left, my first sketch proposal. Thanks to AD @MarkWintersArt guidance, the direction steered towards the more balanced, less dark/creepy version now (thanks Mark!) Hope to see Aminatou again in time."

The original may look too dark to the younger audience but Magic: The Gathering has featured more horrifying artworks than this version, and this one looks like a card from Shadowmoor. The final version still looks creepy but the lighter background balances the piece a bit. Wizards of the Coast should release a card with this art but I would rather have the final version for a playmat.
