Magic: The Gathering Pro Yuuya Watanabe Disqualified From Mythic Championship II For Marked Cards

Wizards of the Coast

Mythic Championship II: London is happening this weekend and one of the top-performing Magic: The Gathering players of the Modern format tournament has been disqualified for having marked cards, according to Wizards of the Coast.

Here's the official statement from Wizards of the Coast:

"During a deck check in Round 15 at Mythic Championship II, the judge staff noticed an issue with Yuuya Watanabe's deck where the sleeves of his Urza's Power Plants were marked in a specific way. Three Urza's Mines and one Urza's Tower had a different marking, and three Urza's Towers and one Urza's Mine also had a different marking. No other cards in the deck nor sideboard had any of these marks. The judge staff determined that the odds of this happening by accident were close to nonexistent, and disqualified Watanabe from the event."

This is shocking news for fans of the Japanese pro player and one of the 32 Magic Pro League members for the 2019 season. Watanabe, who played Tron in the Modern event, has never been caught cheating before and since he's a Hall of Famer and considered to be one of the best Japanese Magic players in the world, this is just hard to believe.

Wizards of the Coast went on to say that the infraction will be further investigated by the MPL.

Over on Twitter, other players and members of the MTG community have weighed their thoughts on the disqualification news:

What do you think about this shocking news from Mythic Championship II: London? Do you think Yuuya intended to cheat?
