Magic: The Gathering Pro Player Yuuya Watanabe Banned For 30 Months & Removed From Hall of Fame & MPL

Wizards of the Coast have released a statement regarding Yuuya Watanabe's disqualification at Magic: The Gathering's Mythic Championship II: London. The Japanese player was disqualified for having marked cards after judges checked his deck during Round 15 of the Modern tournament. After investigating the infraction, the MPL has decided to ban Watanabe from DCI sanctioned events for 30 months. He was also removed from the Magic Pro League and the Magic Hall of Fame.

The statement was made on the MTGEsports website today. "As part of this investigation, the sleeves in question were examined multiple times by multiple judges and tournament officials, we reviewed recordings of matches from Mythic Championship II as well as past tournaments, and we considered statements from Watanabe as well as Mythic Championship II judges and tournament officials," the MPL announced.

The MPL also wrote that information on his replacement in the MPL will be announced by next week.

This is definitely one of the most shocking Magic: The Gathering news ever. Yuuya was considered one of the best players in the world and it's sad to see him get banned for 30 months for having marked sleeves. His Modern Tron deck had some marked sleeves on Tron lands like Urza's Mine, Urza's Tower, and Urza's Power Plant while the rest of the cards didn't.

Yuuya's sponsor Cygames had released a statement from Yuuya regarding his disqualification but sadly, that won't change the MPL's decision to ban him and remove him from the Hall of Fame and the Magic Pro League.

What do you think about the MPL's decision regarding Yuuya Watanabe?
