Magic: The Gathering Online Introduces New System To Handle Card Bans

Wizards of the Coast

As part of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gatheringbanned and restricted announcement today, it was revealed that Magic Online will introduce a new system to handle card bans. This will allow them to ban cards in the game client without requiring a downtime where players are removed from Magic Online to make the ban list change.

It will only impact the players using the cards banned. So for the latest ban changes, only players who have a copy of Krark-Clan Ironworks will be automatically removed from any Leagues they are participating in and their entries will be reimbursed. Prizes earned at the point of removal will be granted manually but the results of any active League matches at that point will not count. Players who are waiting in a queue for a tournament to start will be removed from that queue and will have their entry reimbursed. Players playing in a non-League tournament that is already happening will not be affected and may finish normally.

This new type of system is not something typically done so this is a good sign that reinforces all of Wizards of the Coast's communication so far that Magic Online isn't dying and it will continue to co-exist with Arena.
