Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Explains The Main Reason Why The 3-Colored Legendary Creatures Were Printed in Core Set 2020

The latest Magic: The Gathering set Core Set 2020 featured six three-colored legendary creatures: "Kaalia, Zenith Seeker", "Kethis, the Hidden Hand", "Kylar, Wind's Fury", "Omnath, Locus of the Roil", "Rienne, Angel of Rebirth", and "Yarok, the Desecrated". It turns out that these legendary creatures were originally designed for the purpose of Brawl format. Magic: The Gathering head designer Mark Rosewater revealed the main reason when asked about how R&D feel about the requirement to keep enough 2-3 color legendary creatures for Brawl.

"Core 2020 has the wedge legendary creatures primarily for this purpose," Rosewater said on his Blogatog.

Earlier this month, Wizards of the Coast announced its renewed focus to Brawl, a Commander variant that uses only Standard-legal cards. The company announced that Brawl is coming to Magic Arena and that Brawl preconstructed decks will be available when the new expansion Throne of Eldraine will be released this fall.

These six legendary creatures from Core Set 2020 all have great potential to be viable Commanders for the Brawl format, so you can start brewing soon.

Are you going to play Brawl with one of these Core Set 2020 legendary creatures?

Throne of Eldraine is set to release on October 4. Prerelease will be held on September 28-29.
