Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Reveals More Info About The Planeswalkers of War of the Spark

Wizards of the Coast

Last week, Wizards of the Coast announced that there will be 36 Planeswalker cards featured in the next Magic: The Gathering set, War of the Spark, and that each booster pack will contain at least one Planeswalker card. Since the announcement, fans have been wondering if the Planeswalker cards will be reprints, new, or a mix of both, and now, we have the answer.

Magic head designer Mark Rosewater has revealed two more pieces of information about the Planeswalkers of War of the Spark. On his Blogatog, Rosewater confirmed that all 36 Planeswalker cards in the upcoming set are new. That's a huge amount of new Planeswalkers coming for the story-driven set and War of the Spark is probably going to introduce uncommon Planeswalkers.

Rosewater also confirmed in a separate Blogatog post that War of the Spark's story will also feature Planeswalkers that won't appear in cards in the upcoming set.

Although we still don't know many details about War of the Spark's epic story, the set's teaser (watch it above) and the new details reveal that they're doing something they've never done for a Magic set before. Having 36 Planeswalker cards in one set sounds crazy but I'm sure the R&D team figured out a way to make the gameplay balanced for limited and constructed formats. With the huge amount of Planeswalkers and an epic story, War of the Spark is shaping up to be an exciting Magic set.

War of the Spark will be released on May 3, 2019. It's the third of a series of consecutive sets set in Ravnica and is said to focus on the epic war between Nicol Bolas and the Gatewatch.
