Just in time for MagicFest Austin this weekend, Wizards of the Coast has announced the Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix Player Points cap for this year's events. WotC clarified a couple of points about the policy for earning Players Points from Grand Prix events when calculating seasonal ranking:
> The first two Grand Prix events players participate in per each Players Tour series cycle will contribute toward the total Player Points earned when calculating rankings.
> Subsequent Grand Prix events during that Players Tour series cycle will not contribute toward total Player Points earned when calculating rankings.
The Players Tour series cycle is the qualification window for each set of Players Tour events. You can check out the MagicFest schedule and the qualification window below:
The fact that the policy doesn't count the best finishes sounds terrible for Grand Prix grinders. In fact, Wizards of the Coast notes that if a player competing in a Grand Prix event would like any Player Points earned to be exempted and not be used for calculating season ranking, they must notify them prior to the beginning of the first round of that Grand Prix via email at esports@wizards.com. This will allow that player to earn Player Points from a future Grand Prix event within the same Players Tour series cycle instead. I guess this will give players in regions other than North America an advantage since they have less Grand Prix events each year while the U.S. Grand Prix players have more events but only the two best per season will count.
