Magic: The Gathering Fans React to The New Pioneer Format

Magic: The Gathering is shaking things up a lot this week with the recent bannings of "Field of the Dead" in Standard, and "Arcum Astrolabe" in Pauper, but the biggest surprise from Wizards of the Coast is the announcement of a new nonrotating Magic format called Pioneer, which features cards from Return to Ravnica and forward. While some fans are criticizing WotC's decision to launch a new format, some fans are already brewing Pioneer decks online, and have shared them on Twitter:

Check out the other reactions on the Pioneer format on Twitter:

One of the most common complaints about Pioneer is the fact that WotC currently doesn't have plans to add the new format to Magic Arena, with some fans saying that they should have just combined Arena's nonrotating format, Historic with Pioneer. Since they plan to have sanctioned tabletop tournaments for Pioneer, it's just weird to see an entirely different nonrotating format on Arena. Hopefully, Wizards will eventually add the Pioneer-legal cards on Arena to expand on the free-to-play game's Historic format. Or maybe WotC created the new Pioneer format with that intention since adding the Modern format would require more cards from older MTG sets.

Let's not forget the Pioneer memes from the fans:

Earlier today, we reported that someone bought up many of the presumed Pioneer staples a week before WotC announced the new format.

With four MagicFests already confirmed to have Pioneer Grand Prix events in Q1 2020, it's clear that Wizards of the Coast wants this new format to be taken seriously.
