Magic: The Gathering Designer Made A Card Inspired By His True Story of Falling Down A Volcano

Four years ago, Magic: The Gathering Senior Designer Gavin Verhey fell down a volcano, specifically Mount Liamuiga in the Carribeans, and recently, Wizards of the Coast revealed the MTG card he designed that was inspired by his experience, and it's called "Problematic Volcano", a playtest card from the newly-announced Mystery Booster.

On his Facebook page, Verhey shared a photo of what the actual printed card of "Problematic Volcano" looks like, and he said that he did the art for it. It turns out that the person falling on the side of the volcano in the art represents him.

If you want to know the story behind this card, Verheywrote a lengthy blog about his experience of falling down the volcano and missing his cruise.

Design-wise, "Problematic Volcano" looks like a fun card to play. It's a World Enchantment that lets players choose which side of the volcano their creatures will be on, and if they're on different sides of the volcano, they can't block each other. This is an interesting ability that I hope WotC will officially introduce in an upcoming MTG set.

Verhey described the Mystery Booster set as "Chaos Draft meets Futuresight". The WPN version of the Mystery Booster is set to release on March 13, 2020.
