Magic: The Gathering Designer Explains Why Showcase Garruk's Gorehorn Has No Text

One of the most popular questions Magic: The Gathering fans have been asking since the release of Core Set 2021 last month is "How come the Showcase version of Garruk's Gorehorn doesn't have anything on its text box at all?"

The regular version of the 7/3 common "vanilla" green creature has a lengthy flavor text, and the card's lack of abilities allows it to have space for a chunky amount of text, but how come the Showcase version doesn't have anything on its text box at all?

In the latest episode of Good Morning Magic, Magic Senior Designer Gavin Verhey explains why the Showcase version of Garruk's Gorehorn doesn't feature anything on the card's text box. According to Verhey, there was a discussion whether to carry the flavor text from the regular version to the Showcase version or not. It would be the first Showcase card to feature flavor text, but the design team at Wizards of the Coast ultimately decided to go with consistency, so that's why the card has no flavor text. It's the first-ever creature card with a text box but doesn't have anything on it. We've seen full-art creature cards with no text below but this one has a text box.

Verhey went on to explain why WotC included cool treatments of common cards like Garruk's Gorehorn in the set.

Do you think it's weird to see a creature card with nothing in its textbox at all?
