Magic: The Gathering Arena Ranks 11th Most Impactful PC Game in Q1 2020

Wizards of the Coast's digital card game Magic: The Gathering Arena was just officially released last September, and it has already become one of the most impactful PC games this year.

Esports Observer recently did an analysis of the most impactful PC games of the first quarter of 2020, and MTG Arena ranks 11th, surpassing other popular games like Blizzard's Overwatch, EA's Fifa 2020, and Activision's Warcraft III and World of Warcraft.

The analysis measured esports earnings as well as Esports earnings, and as Esportsobserver notes, several games improved or downgraded on the Impact Index in the previous quarter due to a lack of esports competions as COVID-19 policies caused cancellations, postponements, and suspensions of several major esports events around the world.

The analysis notes that MTG Arena's most important annual event, the $1M prize pool Magic World Championship, generated 1.49M hours watched, so that significantly contributed to the game's success. However, several major tabletop and digital Magic tournaments have been cancelled lately due to the pandemic, so it's unclear if MTG Arena can hold its rank throughout the rest of the year.

Only ten PC games surpassed Arena, with League of Legends topping the rank by a huge lead. Blizzard Entertainment's digital card game Hearthstone is ranked ninth in the list, but Arena will probably surpass it in the near future.
