Magic: The Gathering Arena Brawl Launch Event Details Revealed

The new Brawl format is finally coming to Magic: The Gathering Arena this Thursday. Wizards of the Coast is officially launching Brawl in Arena on October 24, and they're kicking off the launch with a week-long Brawl event running from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1.

The Brawl event will have an entry cost but the event will offer rewards of free Rare cards unavailable in Arena booster packs, and card styles. The entry fee for the Brawl event is 1,000 gold or 200 gems. There will also be free weekly events starting on Nov. 7 and every Wednesday thereafter. You can also play Brawl with your friends in Direct Challenge play mode.

Here are the rewards that MTGA players can win at the Brawl event:

One win: A Rare copy of Mace the Valiant and its card style
Two wins: A Rare copy of Faerie Formation and its card style
Three wins: A Rare copy of Taste of Death and its card style
Four wins: A Rare copy of Embereth Skyblazer and its card style
Five wins: A Rare copy of Thorn Mammoth and its card style

Each player can win a reward only once during the duration of the Brawl Launch event, but they can continue playing even after winning five wins. The rewards can't be acquired in regular MTG Arena boosters but they can still unlock them using Rare wildcards.

Last month, Magic Arena had a special Brawl preview event called Eldraine Courtside Brawl that allowed players to play the four Throne of Eldraine pre-constructed Brawl decks. You can watch me play the Bant deck with "Chulane, Teller of Tales" below:

Unlike that event, the Brawl Launch event will not have any preconstructed decks available for players to choose; you will have to build a minimum of 60-card deck with one commander (a legendary creature or planeswalker). Just like the Commander format, you can only have one copy of each card in the deck except for basic lands, but in Brawl, you can only use Standard-legal cards. The spells should match the colors of its commander, so if your commander is "Chulane, Teller of Tales", you can only use spells that are green, white, and blue.

Wizards of the Coast describes the Brawl format as "a little like Standard, a little like Commander, and a uniquely exciting deck-brewing challenge. Build a deck around a specific legendary creature or planeswalker from the Standard card pool, and battle against friends in one-on-one or multiplayer free-for-all games."
