MTG Head Designer Confirms Planeswalkers With Static Abilities Are Coming

Wizards of the Coast

If Magic: The Gathering fans want to know anything about the future of their favorite trading card game, Mark Rosewater is the right person to ask. Thankfully, the Magic Head Designer takes his time to respond to questions on his Blogatog page and Twitter. His latest response just confirmed what we've never seen in Magic: The Gathering before: Planeswalkers with static abilities.

A fan asked him if or when a Planeswalker with static ability on the battlefield (I.E. as long as 'planeswalker' is on the battlefield, creatures you control have first strike, trample, haste, etc...) will be made.

"It's a when. Planeswalker design space is limited, so we've been slow-rolling innovation," Rosewater explained on his Blogatog.

With the number of Planeswalker cards Wizards of the Coast are printing for new Magic sets and Planeswalker decks every year, it's not surprising to hear from Rosewater that Planeswalker cards with static abilities will eventually be designed. We've already seen creature cards that could transform into Planeswalkers so it's just a matter of time before we see new Planeswalkers with types of abilities we've never seen before.
