Klingons in Star Trek: Discovery Will Speak With Subtitles

Based on what we've seen in the Star Trek: Discovery trailers, the Klingons will have a significant role in the story of the upcoming sci-fi series, and Trek linguists may want to warm up on their Klingon skills ahead of the show's premiere.

During Star Trek: Discovery's San Diego Comic-Con panel, executive producer Gretchen Berg revealed that the Klingons on the show will speak Klingon, so their dialgoue will be interpreted to viewers through subititles, yet Berg said that those who are familiar with the Klingon language should be able to follow along with the conversation. I think that's a better approach as it adds more realism to the story. Seeing alien creatures speak in English could often sound awkward, and to hear them speak Klingon in the show would give a better depiction of them.

Synopsis:

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere on CBS on September 24.
