First Look at Magic: The Gathering Zendikar Rising Modal Double-Faced Cards

Wizards of the Coast has revealed new details for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering expansion Zendikar Rising, including our first look at the modal double-faced cards (MDFC), a new kind of double-sided card that features a Creature, Instant, or Sorcery on the front side, and a Land on the back side. For example, check out Valakut Awakening // Valakut Stoneforge. When you play the card, you choose which side, so you can play either the Sorcery spell or the Land side.

Here's the video that Wizards released explaining how the MDFCs work:

This card is great in preventing mana issues: If you're mana-screwed, you can play it as Valakut Stonehenge; and in the late game, if you don't need any more lands, you can cast it as Valakut Awakening.

They will probably release a cycle of MDFCs with a card for each color, so we'll have to wait and see what the other cards will do when they officially reveal them this week.

Zendikar Rising is set to release on September 25, 2020; it will release on MTG Arena on Sept. 17.
