Cyberpunk 2077 Map "Might Be A Little Bit Smaller" Than The Witcher 3 But Much Denser

If you're used to The Witcher 3's traversable landmass, Cyberpunk 2077's urban dystopia might feel smaller to you - until you explore what's actually in it. While CD Porjekt's last game, The Witcher 3, featured fantasy realms with massive countryside to explore, the developer is more focused on making one huge city in Cyberpunk 2077.

During an interview with Gamesradar at Gamescom 2019, CD Projekt Red producer Richard Borzymonwski explained the approach the developer is taking to creating the virtual world of Night City in Cyberpunk 2077.

"If you look at pure surface [in terms of] square kilometers, then Cyberpunk 2077 might even be a little bit smaller than The Witcher 3, but it's the density of the content, taking the world of The Witcher and squeezing it right in, deleting the wilderness between," Borzymonwski said. "Obviously [...] in The Witcher we were an open world with vast lanes and forests in between smaller cities and larger cities like Novigrad, but in Cyberpunk 2077 we're set in Night City. It's an integral part of the setting; it's essentially a protagonist if you want to call it that, so it has to be denser. It wouldn't give us the end effect we wanted to achieve if the city wouldn't be believable [...] so we packed it full of life."

Cyberpunk 2077's setting has more spaces stacked up on each other vertically so it's easy to see how the Night City is more densely packed than the fantasy realms of The Witcher 3. Based on what we've seen so far, it looks like there's not much to explore outside of the city anyway but hopefully, they will expand the world of Cyberpunk more with future expansions.

Here's a description of the Cyberpunk 2077 game:

"Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character's cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you."

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 16, 2020.
