Blizzard Files Lawsuit Against Mobile Game Company For 'Massive' Warcraft 'Ripoff'

Blizzard Entertainment has filed a lawsuit on August 16 in California against Sina Games for its free-to-play Glorious Saga that "almost entirely copied from the Warcraft games and related products."

Polygon Reports that according to the lawsuit, Blizzard is "seeking a court order to stop the infringement and maximum damages for the 'serious and irreparable harm to Blizzard and its business.'" The developer of World of Warcraft is asking for "$150,000 per infringed work", in addition to attorneys' fees and other charges that are "just and appropriate".

Sina Games is a subsidiary of the Chinese company Sina Corp, and Blizzard alleges that "many" of the software and tech company's games are based off popular franchises such as Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Warcraft.

According to Polygon, Blizzard's lawyers claim that the defendants have "profited handsomely" from the Glorious Saga and its alleged copyright infringement, "attracting thousands of consumers" to the game by using the offending imagery. "Every monster, creature, animal, and vehicle in the Infringing Game was copied from the Warcraft games," the suit claims "Weapons, amulets, and other objects were taken straight from the Warcraft games, without pretense. Audio cues and sound effects from the Warcraft games were reproduced for the Infringing Game."

According to Blizzard's lawyers, Glorious Saga's mobile icon looks identical to the Battle of Azeroth expansion cover. Both images feature a human and an orc-like character facing each other eye-to-eye and snarling.

According to the lawsuit, Glorious Saga appears to include "copies of Illidan Stormrage, Grommash Hellscream, Malfurion, and Gul'dan. The developer alleges that Sina Games' use of Warcraft material was "willful and intentional."
