Alien, Doctor Who, Harry Potter Actor John Hurt Dies at 77


Sir John Hurt, who starred in Alien, Doctor Who, and Harry Potter, died Friday at the age of 77, his agent Charles McDonald confirmed to the Washington Post.

The British actor best known for playing eccentric characters such as Harry Potter's wand maker Ollivander and Hellboy's Guardian, revealed in 2015 that he was battling pancreatic cancer. Hurt starred in over 200 films and TV shows.

Hurt was also known for playing Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four, based on George Orwell's dystopian novel, the Dragon in the Merlin TV show, the deformed Joseph Merrick in The Elephant Man, the War Doctor in Doctor Who, and Professor Broom in Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy films.

In Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror Alien, Hurt plays a guy named Kane whose stomach explodes with an alien. In Mel Brooks's 1987 Spaceballs, he repeated a similar scene.

Hurt often played characters who died dramatically. Someone even made a supercut called The Many Deaths of John Hurt which featured 40 death scenes. You can watch it below:
