J. J. Abrams Promises To Take Fans Somewhere New In Star Wars: Episode IX

Some Star Wars fans might be a bit wary that Lucasfilm put The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams in charge of Star Wars: Episode IX, but the filmmaker promises that the Star Wars sequel trilogy will definitely add something new to the science fiction franchise's lore.

Though his entry to the galaxy far, far away successfully revived the Star Wars franchise, many felt that The Force Awakens took too many notes from A New Hope, making the film feel so much like a rehash of the original Star Wars movie.

Now, appearing on the BBC radio show (via Star Wars News Net) along with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's composer, Michael Giacchino, Abrams promises that Episode IX will push the boundaries of the saga.

"Well, it's certainly something that I'm aware of now working on Episode IX – coming back into this world after having done Episode VII. I feel like we need to approach this with the same excitement that we had when we were kids, loving what these movies were. And at the same time, we have to take them places that they haven't gone, and that's sort of our responsibility. It's a strange thing – Michael's worked on things like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek and Star Wars, and these are the things of dreams. Yet we can't just revel in that; we have to go elsewhere."

This is assuring news for everyone. Though it's pleasant to see nods to the original Star Wars movies in the franchise's newer installments, everyone wants new designs, new ships, new weapons, new creatures, and more importantly, a fresh story.

We can't wait to see what Episode IX will bring when it premieres on December 20, 2019. Meanwhile, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to hit cinemas December 15, 2017.
