Is Squall Really Dead in Final Fantasy VIII? Series Producer Gives An Answer

There's a crazy Final Fantasy VIII theory that claims that Squall actually died after being stabbed by Sorceress Edea's ice spear, and the rest of the game is just his dream. A fan actually created a website explaining the theory in incredible detail. While some fans believe that Final Fantasy VIII's story was meant to be interpreted that way, there was no way to know for sure, but thanks to the series producer Yoshinori Kitase, we now have an answer.

Kitase was in Seattle last week for PAX West to talk about his latest game, MobiusFinal Fantasy. Jason Schreier of Kotaku was there to ask him about the biggest Final Fantasy theories fans came up with, and the producer out of the six theories he asked, Kitase debunked five of them.

"No, that is not true. I think he was actually stabbed around the shoulder area, so he was not dead. But that is a very interesting idea, so if we ever do make a remake of Final Fantasy VIII, I might go along with that story in mind."

So there you have it: Squall was not dead after Disc 1. And besides, it would be so ridiculous if the events in Discs 2 to 3 ended up just being a dream.

Hopefully, Kitase and his team will work on a remake for Final Fantasy VIII, but I hope they don't let this theory alter the true story of the original game.
