Iron Man’s Successor Confirmed—It’s Ironheart

Marvel has already confirmed that Tony Stark will be taking off the iron suit. And we all know that Riri Williams, a 15-year-old certified M.I.T. genius, will be taking up the suit, albeit with her own spin to it.

Now the company has finally revealed Riri decked in red and touting not just a new form but also a new name for the hero. According to WIRED, Riri will reveal her new hero persona in November—and she will take up the hero's calling as Ironheart.

Riri will debut with her suit in Invincible Iron Man #1, which will be from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Stefano Caselli. After experimenting with a few names—Iron Woman and Iron Maiden, both of which, let's admit, don't have the same ring as he final version—the team settled with Ironheart.

"Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related."

It seems that her hero's name ties very well with her story, so I'm all for that kind of storytelling. Hopefully, her story will also address the controversy that Riri's character as an African-American female teenager will ring through.

From the looks of the cover art, Ironheart seems like the kind of hero that's not all about fighting too seriously. The way she soars in the sky and that almost mellow look on the Ironheart mask is a stark difference from Ironman's stance when he flies. It looks like, even though she has become a hero worth following in the footsteps of Stark, she hasn't lost her touch as her own person.

If the cover alone can reflect the personality of Riri Williams/Ironheart, then I have high hopes for this new direction.

The Black Flash is definitely returning to the series.
