Infinity War's 'Oh Snap' Moment Was Originally in Avengers 4

Most fans expected Avengers: Infinity War to be the first part of an epic story, with many of us impatiently waiting for the second film, the unnamed Avengers 4. However, everyone was still shocked by how it ended, with Thanos snapping his Infinity Gauntlet-wearing fingers and eliminating half of the universe at a great cost to his physical being.

It really made for an effective ending, so fans might be surprised to know that it was supposed to be in Avengers 4.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that the finger-snapping scene was going to happen sometime in the second film. They said that the fourth film would literally transition from a scene in Infinity War but chose to go with the downer ending to get fans salivating for more. To their credit, it worked.

"It wasn't just, well, we've got too much story, we'd better chop it in half. But what we realized is, it would feel more like a cliffhanger than we intended, it would be a continuation of exactly what you were watching before, but as the culmination of 10 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, it should be as big as it wants to be, and as sprawling."

Funnily enough, if Avengers 4 did start with the finger-snapping the scene would have felt like a direct adaptation of one set of panels in Jim Starlin's The Infinity Gauntlet. In the comics, The finger-snapping and wipeout of half the universe happen in the first issue of the six-issue mini. As if that wasn't ironic enough, Spider-Man is one of the first heroes who go on to find out about the massacre and doesn't disintegrate.

Avengers 4 comes out on May 3.
