How The Writers Of Avengers: Infinity War Juggle The MCU's Continuity

It's not easy being a writer for the MCU, particularly the massive goliath that is Avengers: Infinity War and it's sequel, which looks to be even bigger. Not only do the writers have to write for a huge cast of characters but they also have to make sure everything flows well from one film to another.

Two of those writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, spoke with CinemaBlend about the difficulties juggling all of Marvel's properties, while also pointing out how it's not as limiting as it's often made out to be.

McFeely and Markus bring up how challenging it was, making sure that events in Black Panther, Ant-Man and The Wasp, and Thor: Ragnarok went according to plan for Infinity War. They also discussed the problems of making each movie feel like a piece of a puzzle, while also trying to make them feel standalone. It's pretty cool seeing them acknowledge some of the criticisms that the MCU often gets from fans and haters alike.

Markus:How do you not fall into the trap of what these movies are sometimes accused of, which is just sometimes feeding each other and not being standalone things. ... You can't make them overly dependent on each other, and yet you still want to have this bloodstream flowing through the universe.

McFeely:Peyton Reed and his group of writers are going to make whatever movie they want. We had very small requests like, 'It would be great if right there that person was -- is that okay? Good?' You always make the best movie you can. Same thing with Black Panther and same thing with Captain Marvel. They're gonna make the movies they're gonna make. And in this unique case, [we make] very small tiny suggestions for beginnings and endings like that.

Juggling the complex continuity of the MCU definitely sounds challenging, especially when it's all leading to a huge film like Infinity War. At the least, it's good to see them be aware of the company's criticisms and know how to work with other filmmakers.

Avengers: Infinity War comes out on April 27.
