When it was announced that Dragon Ball Super would finish with the Tournament of Power, fans were taken by surprise. They felt that a series as popular as Super would have Toei Animation's support for some time. Turns out that was the case, as a Super movie was announced for much later this year and a new series could come out sometime in the future.
Interestingly enough, an interview with Dragon Room chief Akio Iyoku (translated by Todd Blankenship) revealed that the pitch for a Dragon Ball Super film took plenty of time. Fans might be surprised to know that a Super movie had been a topic amongst the show's writers since 2017 and it took several pitches before it could get off the ground.
According to the interview, communication with Toriyama was mostly done through email with a few important conversations done in purpose. Toriyama had actually turned down most of the pitches but the various talks did get his creative juices running and he eventually settled on an idea that would involve the Saiyans.
Soon enough, Toriyama provided 20 sheets worth of character designs, story, and more. Now that the film has a release date, it will be interesting to see what the fruits of their labor ends up looking like.
Dragon Ball Super: The Movie comes out on December 14.
