Here's Why X-23 Stopped Calling Herself Wolverine

When a superhero adopts someone's mantle and decides to drop it, the writer in charge has to come up with a good reason as to why they went back to their old identity. It's not an impossible task by any means since Nick Spencer's Captain America book did set up Sam Wilson using the Falcon alias again but it can make for some awkward writing at times.

If this preview from X-Men editor Jordan D. White means anything, it looks like writer Mariko Tamaki found a solid reason for X-23 to stop using the Wolverine name and it's not just cause Logan returned. More of it will be revealed in this week's X-23 #3 but this is a solid enough snippet to know what's up.

According to the preview above, Laura Kinney actually hates the name X-23 but uses it to make sure that her creators never do this to other people again. She also wants these people to remember that their experiment is the one that ended them, making it somewhat poetic. The fact that she is also doing it for her sisters is a nice callback to All-New Wolverine considering their sad fate.

Old codename aside, fans might also want to get it for the art as this preview from Bleeding Cool shows how talented of an illustrator Juan Cabal is. The figure work is gorgeous and the facial expressions are on point. Cabal could have a solid future with Marvel if the artist's work remains this pretty.

Here's hoping that this creative team remains for a bit, though knowing Marvel the artist will probably be moved to a new book for some fresh start or something.

X-23 #3 comes to comic book stores this week.
