Here’s The Reason Why Gundam Is Finally Getting A Live-Action Movie

The Gundam franchise has been around for decades, but for the longest while the franchise has kept out of the live-action movie game and focused on its various anime series and anime movies. But then, three weeks ago, Legendary Pictures and Sunrise announced that they were working together to bring a live-action Gundam movie to the big screen, and there's been nothing but excitement.

Now, speaking with Weekly Playboy (translated via Gundam Universe), Sunrise president Miyakawa Yasuo explains why the company has decided to finally work on a live-action movie for the Gundam franchise.

According to Yasuo, the company had already consolidated the Asian market, making it clear that it's already time for the company to work on a live-action Gundam movie.

"Already, about 30-40% of Gundam products are sold abroad. Now, it is time to return to the North American market which Sunrise moved away from in recent years. To be able to enter that market, a live-action project feels necessary," reads the translation of Yasuo's comments.

Yasuo makes a good point. While Gundam already has a strong hold in Asia because of all of its anime shows and anime movies, the franchise needs to penetrate the Western market by working on a live-action project of its own. Though there could be a lot of room for errors, Sunrise made the great choice of teaming up with Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the mecha movie series, Pacific Rim. If the Gundam franchise has any chance of making a decent live-action movie, then it's with Legendary.

The Gundam live-action movie doesn't have a release date yet, but we'll let everyone know as soon as we get word.
