Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise, however, Lucasfilm was so impressed by Rian Johnson’s work, they decided to give the director his own trilogy of Star Wars films outside the Skywalker saga.

Now, that we’re fast approaching the third and final chapter of Lucasfilm’s sequel trilogy, it looks like there are a few new details about Johnson’s upcoming set of Star Wars movies.

Speaking in an interview with From the Grapevine, Johnson’s production partner, Ram Bergman, decided to open up about the upcoming trilogy. Confirming what Johnson previously told fans, Bergman says the new films are going to be completely new, featuring new characters outside the Star Wars saga.

"It’s a completely new trilogy that writer-director Rian Johnson, my partner, is going to create," Bergman said. "It’s all new characters. Everything is new."

Exciting as it may be, fans have to wait for a while for the trilogy to begin.

"I can't tell you because we don't know yet," Bergman admitted. "Maybe in two years; it's just in the early stages."

Though we’ll still have to see whether or not the trilogy comes out in two years, pinning the first film for a potential 2020 release sounds like a pretty big deal – after all, it would be the next film to follow after Star Wars: Episode IX. Lucasfilm must be pinning a lot on Johnson’s new trilogy. Let’s wait and see.

Lucasfilm’s latest release, Solo: A Star Wars Story is currently screening in cinemas.
